Biography
Sometimes credited as Jon Edwards or John Edwards, this drummer is best known as Eddie Edwards or just plain "Eddie the drummer." He is a member of two long-running British bands, the Vibrators and the Inmates, and built up his reputation during the rise of the pub rock style. This was a reaction to perceived excesses of psychedelia that developed at the end of the '60s, a return to the simple rhythmic roots that was also celebrated stateside with "good ol' rock and roll." As the '70s progressed the situation gets more complicated than a listener might expect for a music with only three chords in it, at least for those fixated with labels. Edwards' first major band, the Vibrators, was formed in 1976 and has been active ever since. It was regarded as a punk band at the time and decades later was described as one of the longest-running combos in this style. Rock pundits might wince at the tension between punk rock and pub rock but fortunately a drummer doesn't really have to worry about such distinctions, they just set up their kits and play. Edwards is a perfect example. He became the drummer for the Inmates in the early '80s, in time for that band's fab tribute to the Beatles and six more albums. Meanwhile the Vibrators have managed to keep going despite the other band activity of Edwards', a situation that like many involving rhythm section players requires lots of phone calls and scratching at calenders. Factor in this drummer's involvement with jam session projects such as the 2002 The British Invasion All-Stars album and an earlier, nearly forgotten collaboration with members of the Pretty Things and Procol Harum and it seems as if Eddie Edwards is the ideal rock repertory man, familiar and comfortable with all periods of the genre. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
