Joshua Horowitz
Biography
Joshua Horowitz has brought a fresh outlook to the traditional eastern European Jewish dance music. The recipient of numerous prizes and grants in composition and musicology, Horowitz has combined his virtuosic instrumental skills with the passion of an inquisitive ethnomusicologist. Performing on a three row chromatic button accordion, built in 1889 by Karl Budowitz, and tsimbal, a Hungarian hammered dulcimer, Horowitz has explored the full spectrum of Jewish music. While he performs early Jewish instrumental music with clarinet player Joel Rubin of progressive klezmer band, Brave Old World, he's taken a more modern approach with his performances with Brave Old World and Alicia Svigals. Horowitz has performed avant garde Jewish music with his band, Budowitz, featuring Merlin Shepherd (clarinet, flute, saxophone), Laszlo Major (violin), Tomas Gombal (violin) and Zsolt Kurtosi (cello).
Horowitz, who holds a masters degree in composition and musicology from the Academy of Music in Graz, Austria, has lectured extensively for the Klezmer Music Research Project. In addition to compiling and editing a Judeo-Spanish songbook, published by Peters Publishing, Horowitz has written many articles on the counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach. Horowitz composed the score for the Czechoslavakian film, #Pevny Bod. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
