A talented trumpeter who recorded a consistently rewarding string of lesser-known dates, Dennis Gonzalez's playing fell between advanced hard bop and free jazz. He moved to Dallas in 1977 and started the DAAGNIM label, for which he recorded frequently with top local players. Starting in 1986, Gonzalez also recorded several dates for the Silkheart label (utilizing Charles Brackeen on one session) and Konnex. He was also a radio host, and was part of the airstaff at Dallas's KERA-FM for more than two decades. Dennis Gonzalez died on March 15, 2022 in Dallas, Texas; he was 67 years old. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
