The daughter of film director Stanley Kubrick, Vivian Kubrick has had quite a varied career in association with her father, ranging from child actor in 2001 to documentary filmmaker (Making the Shining) to film underscore composer and musical director for Full Metal Jacket, for which she composed and performed the score on Fairlight keyboards. There was an attempt to submit her score for the film for Academy Award consideration, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) rejected it, unfairly, as being nothing more than a collection of drums and noises. Ironically, "Full Metal Jacket (I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor)," performed by Kubrick and Nigel Goulding with samples of R. Lee Ermey's dialog, was a Top Ten hit across Europe, particularly in Britain, where it rose as high as the number two position and earned a silver record.
