Antonio Rosetti
from Leitmeritz, Czech Republic
January 1, 1750 - June 30, 1792 (age 42)
Biography
A great deal of confusion exists about Antonio Rosetti because of name changes and five Antonio Rosetti's who were active in music during this time. The double bass player received his education in Prague and practiced as a teacher in Znaim. He served in the court of Kraft Ernst as a double bass player and became a deputy to the Kapellmeister in Reicha whom he succeeded in 1785. As a productive composer of instrumental music, primarily orchestral and chamber, he employed the use of Baroque and Classical aspects. Rosetti used ritornello in sonatas and concertos and he appears to have imitated his first subjects rather than moving to a second subject by repeating the theme. In his own personal styling Rosetti wrote melodic slow movements, developed significant compositions for the horn establishing it as a solo instrument and was rated, at least by his contemporaries, with Mozart and Haydn. Rosetti was a respected musician who was commissioned to write symphonies by the Elector of Trier, a Requiem for Mozart's memorial service in Prague, which Rosetti conducted, and the oratorio "Jesus in Gethsamane" for the Duke of York. He was friendly with both Gluck and Piccinni and served for a brief time in the court of the future Friedrich Wilhelm III. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
