Antônio Caetano founded in 1926, with Paulo da Portela and Antônio Rufino, the Oswaldo Cruz samba school, which in 1931 would become the Vai Como Pode and in 1934 would adopt the definitive denomination of Portela. A resourceful musician, Caetano played the trumpet, the saxophone, and the guitar, and was also a talented painter, having designed the Portela flag.
