Biography
Commercial dance music producer and DJ Jakwob, born James Edward Jacob and raised in Lincoln, England, played several instruments as a youngster and was drawn most to piano and drums. As a teenager, he played in a diverse series of bands as his taste in music continued to develop and broaden. A club encounter with Rusko exposed him to dubstep. He started a club night, Wob, but he got into making mash-ups and remixes and used his MySpace page as an outlet. In 2009, he was sought to remix tracks by the Temper Trap, Frankmusik, and the Veronicas, but his 2010 remix of Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed" -- an atmospheric hybrid of house, dubstep, and drum'n'bass -- raised him to a new level. While increasingly busy due to the festival and touring circuit, Jakwob continued to produce remixes for high profile releases, including Tiësto vs. Diplo's "C'mon (Catch 'Em by Surprise)" (featuring Busta Rhymes), Niki the Dove's "DJ, Ease My Mind," and Lana Del Rey's "Video Games" (a collaboration with Etherwood). Jakwob eventually focused on his own original material. In March 2013, he released "Fade," featuring lead vocals from Maiday, which recalled Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" -- what with its dramatic use of piano, strings, and breakbeats -- and reached the Top Ten of the U.K. club chart. He prepared his debut album for release later that year. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
