Biography
A Swedish composer of symphonic and chamber works. At various times an orthopedist, manager of a glass works, and part-owner of a sawmill, Berwald is recognized as a great symphonist and the greatest Swedish composer of the 19th century. His four symphonies (Sérieuse, Capricieuse, Sinfonie singulière, and the Symphony no. 4 in E-flat) are his best works -- fine examples of his audacious sense of modulation combined with a strong classic melodic line. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, Rovi
