Biography
A non-profit organization founded in 2009 by Canadian film director Paul Haggis, Artists for Peace and Justice was created to bring to light and address issues of social injustice and poverty. While its mission is to foster economic growth and empower communities on a local level, its main focus is on Haiti, where it aims to serve the poorest parts of the country by offering courses in education and healthcare. In 2020 the organization released the benefit album Let the Rhythm Lead: Haiti Song Summit, Vol. 1, a collaborative project of songwriters Paul Beaubrun, Jackson Browne, Habib Koité, Jenny Lewis, Raúl Rodríguez, Jonathan Russell, and Jonathan Wilson, with members of the Haitian roots band Lakou Mizik. Recorded in Haiti at the Artists for Peace and Justice artists institute in the town of Jacmel, the 11-track set covered a wide array of styles, from indie rock to flamenco, and featured songs sung in English, Creole, Khassonké, Manding, and Spanish. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
