Adam Miller got his start in music playing with caustic Seattle post punk band the Vogue. In 2001, concurrent with the Vogue re-forming as new band Soiled Doves, Miller released the first material from his new solo project Chromatics, a two-song 7" he recorded on cassette four-track. Before the 7" was released, Miller merged his projects, adding some Soiled Doves members to Chromatics lineup and taking the project from a solo endeavor to a full-on band effort. This Chromatics iteration released 2003 debut album Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz before everyone but Miller quit to form the new band Shoplifting. Miller shuffled through different Chromatics members for a few years, moving slowly from rough-edged experimental punk to more minimal expressions, adding a drum machine, and eventually bringing the band to its final form when Glass Candy's Johnny Jewel came on board and pushed Chromatics more toward the synth-driven indie noir sound that they'd explore from the time of their 2006 album Night Drive until their breakup. Once the sole member of Chromatics, then the bandleader, Miller's role in the band became that of guitarist and collaborative songwriter. Chromatics broke up in August of 2021, and shortly thereafter Miller released his first solo album, Gateway. Written and recorded during the time his long-running band was in the process of breaking up, Gateway was an entirely instrumental album made up of the kind of darkly dreamy cityscapes and mysterious atmospheres that Miller had spent years perfecting in Chromatics. Gateway was released in February of 2022. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
