Mortimer McPherson was raised near the Red Hills Road district of Kingston, an area known for producing Buju Banton and Red Dragon. He grew up in a religious family and sang in the church choir, but was soon captivated by heavy hitters like Bob Marley, Donny Hathaway, and more contemporary R&B artists like John Legend. He made his recording debut in 2014 with the Message Music EP. Around this same time he befriended neo-roots star Protoje, who invited him to collaborate on the song "Protection," which appeared on Protoje's Ancient Future album. With the help of producer Winta James -- whom he had met through working with Protoje -- he built up his profile with the singles "Warning" (2015), "Ganja Train" 2016, and "This Feeling" (2017). He and Protoje resumed their collaboration in 2017 with the single "Truth & Rights" and in 2018, Mortimer returned with his own single, "Careful." ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
