Bluesman Seasick Steve, born in Oakland, CA, led an itinerant life, hoboing and basing himself at various times in Olympia, WA, and Norway. The first release by Seasick Steve the Level Devils, Cheap, came out in 2004, long after the leader had begun playing professionally. Playing electric guitar and singing in a weathered voice in front of an unrefined trio, backed by standup bass and drums, he offered stripped-down electric blues and seemingly off the cuff songs that sounded right out of the juke joint. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
