Johann Georg Albrechtsberger was a renowned organist lauded as the best organist in the world for his time. He succeeded Mozart at St Stephens and preserved compositions from sources extending back to Palestrina and including contemporaries up to Mozart. Johann's collected works by Bach (J. S. and C. P. E.) as well as important north German Lutheran composers was perhaps his most important legacy. Concerning his compositions he left about three hundred sacred works, another three hundred keyboard works and almost two hundred pieces for different instruments. His own compositions are noted for their special effects through instrumentation.
