John Travers
January 1, 1703 - June 1, 1758 (age 55)
Biography
Most of the musical compositions by this English organist were sacred vocal pieces that demonstrated no only his technical skills but also his ability to compose popular melodies. "Ascribe unto the Lord," and "Keep, we beseech Thee" were quite popular during his life and after as they were copied on numerous occasions and contained in a number of anthologies. Travers probably studied under Maurice Greene and served as a chorister at St. George's, was involved in the affairs of the Academy of Ancient music, and became the organist at St. John's of Covent Gardens and Fulham Parish church. Travers was also the organist of the Chapel Royal and was a friend of Pepusch. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
