Biography
Originally from Midwestern America but residing in London, Karen Gwyer is an experimental techno producer whose fluid, amorphous work often contains elements of spacy abstract pop. Primarily composed on analog synthesizers, her music is warm and expressive, with lightly tapping beats underpinning her droning, melodic synth pads and ethereal vocals. Gwyer was born in Iowa and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan before eventually settling in London. Her first release was the 2012 EP I've Been You Twice, which was issued by Patten's Kaleidoscope label. She then signed to No Pain in Pop (which had released Patten's debut album in 2011) for her 2013 debut album, Needs Continuum. Cowboys (For Karen), a collaboration with Torn Hawk, appeared on the label during the same year, and cassette Kiki the Wormhole was released by Opal Tapes. In 2014, No Pain in Pop issued Gwyer's New Roof EP, and she toured Europe with several Opal Tapes artists such as Basic House and 1991. Her acid techno-leaning Bouloman EP arrived on Nous in 2015. The following year, Kiki the Wormhole was issued on vinyl by Public House Recordings and Gwyer released a split 12" single with Beatrice Dillon on Alien Jams. Gwyer's double-LP Rembo was released by Don't Be Afraid in 2017. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
