Mateo Romero
January 1, 1575 - May 10, 1647 (age 72)
Biography
As a young child Romero was taken to Madrid where he was a choirboy under Hele and Rogier. After becoming a member of the Flemish chapel in Madrid Romero became the choirmaster there in 1598 until he retired. Introducing the new style to Spain the music of Romero was greatly appreciated. Many of his compositions have unfortunately been lost including fifteen masses and fifty three villancicos. Most of the surviving works require a continuo and the sacred works show that he was truly a master of arranging melodic lines in one particular voice scoring these settings for many choirs. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
