Heinrich von Herzogenberg
from Graz, Austria
June 10, 1843 - October 9, 1900 (age 57)
Biography
A lifelong friend of Brahms, student of Felix Otto Dessoff, founder of the Bach Society of Leipzig, and professor of composition at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, Herzogenberg's music betrays an interest in the earlier music of Bach and Schutz. He was clearly incluenced by Wagner in his orchestration and by Schumann and Brahms in his piano music. Herzogenberg was an advocate of the geist in Protestant church music and his sacred choral music particularly demonstrates derived structures and settings. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
