Biography
Landlady was formed in 2011 as the solo vehicle for Brooklyn songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Schatz. Schatz's résumé both prior to and in conjunction with Landlady boasts an impressive list of Brooklyn bands and creative endeavors. An active member of Man Man and Father Figures, he has also recorded with bands like Vampire Weekend and Those Darlins, founded the new jazz database Search & Restore, and co-produces the N.Y.C. Winter Jazzfest. Channeling his many influences into a solo project, he recorded his 2011 debut album, Keeping to Yourself, under the name Landlady. With collaborations from future bandmembers Ian Chang, Ian Davis, and Booker Stardrum, Keeping to Yourself introduced Schatz's strange, soulful, art rock vision, which he and his cohorts would continue to flesh out on-stage over the coming years. With the addition of second guitarist Mikey Freedom Hart, the band became a quintet and signed with Portland indie Hometapes to release their second LP, Upright Behavior, in July 2014. Will Graefe replaced Hart for The World Is a Loud Place, which followed in early 2017. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
