Dube was born the youngest of four children in Johannesburg in 1962, to minister Benjamin and gospel singer and educator Grace. The boy's parents formed a family group called the Dube Family Singers. At age seven, Benjamin, Jr. began singing and touring internationally on the church circuit with the group and at 12, in 1974, he learned to play guitar, piano, and drums. In 1976, Benjamin, Sr. was murdered. Grace took the Dube Family Singers out of the country for a time, touring European churches. While in the Netherlands in 1977, they cut the album Father Forgive Them; its title track was penned by Benjamin Dube, Jr. As the family group continued to tour, Dube began studying for the ministry. He was ordained in 1986 at age 24. That same year he cut the single: "Holy Spirit" as Benjamin the Youth Choir. Produced by Chicco Twala for Dephon Records' Ron B label, it was a cross-over hit in South Africa and sold more than 25,000 copies. In 1988, he released the album Ebenezer. Its title cut featured the late South African-born reggae star Lucky Dube (no relation) on duet vocals. The record also sold well in and outside the gospel genre; Dube had become a household name in South Africa. He supported the Rev. James Cleveland on a South African Tour. He went over so well, he won a spot on American tour supporting gospel music legend Andrae Crouch and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. He also sang on the Dube Family Singers' albums We're What We Are and Love Africa to round out the decade. Dube moved to EMI’s CCP Records, and recorded a self-titled album with star producer Sizwe Zako.
While Dube kept releasing singles and albums, his own church ministry was growing. He no longer had time to tour with the Dube Family Singers. In 1994, he founded and served as CEO of High Praise Centre in Boksburg, Johannesburg: a non-profit organization that addresses the spiritual needs of men, women and children. That same year, already a traveling preacher and in-demand public speaker, he spoke at the inauguration of Nelson Mandela. Dube has also shared podiums with Bishop TD Jakes, Bishop John Francis, Bishop Tudor Bismark, Kirk Franklin, Andrae Crouch, Israel Houghton, and others. His rising international profile as a speaker coincided with his being a widely recognized gospel singer and bandleader. His singles reached into churches and on religious radio in countries that included the U.S., Sweden, the Netherlands, Paris, Australia, Japan. In 1999 he recorded the hit live album I Feel Like Going On. Released in 2000 on New York's Harmony Records label, the record topped South Africa's gospel charts and was certified platinum. In 2004 Oh! Bless Our God went multi-platinum, and in 2007 he followed with You Blessed Me Still, a title that hit number one on Europe's gospel charts and was certified triple-platinum in South Africa. He won the South African Music Association's (SAMA) Best Contemporary Gospel category and received an award for Best Praise & Worship Album in 2007. In 2008 he received a Crown Gospel Music award for Best Praise & Worship Artist 2008. At the 2009 Crown Gospel Music Awards, Dube was awarded the Best Male Artist and received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Further, he founded Hope Arise (AHA) in 2009 and co-founded God's Worshipers Convocation (GWC).
Dube also created Dube Connection; a music label licensed to Sony BMG and Spirit Music for his own recordings as well as those of his sons, the Dube Brothers while he signed others. 2010's Worship in His Presence went platinum while 2011's Praise the Lord: The Collection, Vol. 1, was certified gold. When he was home in South Africa, Dube preached and sang to thousands each Sunday. On foreign soil, the many sold-out houses and churches he played demanded his evangelical message as well as his music.
2012's Healing in His Presence was certified multi-platinum, followed by the gold-achieving Looking Back and Renewal in His Presence the following year. After international tours with the Dube Brothers in 2014, Dube wasted no time and delivered the double-length Sanctified in His Presence with guest spots from the Dube Brothers, Mabongi Mabaso, Nomthandazo, Mnguni, and others. After touring the album across South Africa, Asia, and Europe, Dube released Glory in His Presence in 2019. The double album featured a wealth of new material and was loaded with appearances by top-flight South African gospel stars such as Sethu Gumede, Unathi Mzekeli, the Dube Brothers, VaShawn Mitchell, and many others. It was certified platinum in South Africa. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
