James Herb Smith
Biography
This guitarist initially garnered his reputation as one of the Philly soul stalwarts associated with Gamble Huff's Philadelphia International recording studios. James Herb Smith's mentors were guitarists Norman Harris and Bobby Eli, whose initial studio backing group established a distinctive new soul sound which quickly became in demand. The thickness of said sound, expanding to involve orchestra-size backing groups, may leave listeners wondering just what it is Smith is doing anyway. His sound can be felt with more depth on simpler recordings such as the mid-'70s Hollywood Be Thy Name album by New Orleans rock legend Dr. John as well as several sides by funk saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. The guitarist has also recorded with pop singer/songwriter Billy Joel. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
