Biography
The Pop Art were a Great Neck, NY spawned quartet who recorded one single, Rumpelstiltzkin b/w Ode to an Unknown Girl, for Epic Records in 1966. They originally got together as "the Justice League" in 1965, with Mike Gayle on vocals and guitar, and as their principal songwriter, although he didn't compose the A-side of their only single -- rather, Rumpelstiltzkin was the work of British guitarist/songwriter/singer Peter Cowap. The A-side, a hauntingly beautiful mix of soul, folk-rock, and British beat, actually made the lower regions of best-seller listings in New York City -- and deserved to do much better -- but failed to break through nationally; the B-side, a Mike Gayle original, was more folk-rock influenced and a genial tune, somewhat reminiscent of the Lovin' Spoonful's brand of good-time music. Soon after its release, the band got a new drummer, Joel O'Brien, and a keyboard player in one Mark Moogy Klingman. And, after a few transitions and one official breakup, went on to much more substantial contributions in a bolder psychedelic mode under the name the Glitterhouse in 1968, before calling it quits. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
