Born in London to American parents, he grew up listening to Motown classics, David Bowie, Prince, and Michael Jackson, later favoring rappers like 50 Cent, Nas, and the Notorious B.I.G. and beatmaker J Dilla. Basta made his debut as a teenager in 2017 with the single "New Chain," a collaboration with Jay Mooncie and Eden Hall. By the end of the year, the song was featured on Tsarina, Basta's debut mixtape. Major-label Geffen licensed the set, highlighted by "Penelope" -- another Mooncie collaboration -- and gave it a commercial release the following year. That same year, he also issued the short set BOOT, which featured the singles "Britney" and "Roses." Apart from his headlining releases, Basta also recorded with SG Lewis ("Smart Aleck Kill") and Ebenezer ("Stats"). In 2019, he paired with DJDS and Raye on the single "The Fruits," which landed on his third effort, the mixtape Heroine. He then delivered a string of singles, ranging from the emotive "Good News" to the hardened, socially conscious "WTF" with Erick the Architect, both in 2020. The romantic and chill "Lights out" arrived in May 2022. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
