Looking to further explore the blend of traditional English music and glacial post-rock he has touched on with Earth, Dylan Carlson created his solo project, DRCARLSONALBION in 2011, after the drone legends released the first installment of Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light. The solo project takes Earth's sound in a sparser and more contemplative direction, stripping Carlson's playing down to its most basic and essential elements to create the meditative aura that surrounds DRCARLSONALBION's subtle guitar meditations. Carlson debuted the project in 2012 with a trio of releases that included an LP, La Strega and the Cunning Man in the Smoke, a pair of 7" singles, Modern English Folklore Vol. One: Hackney and Modern English Folklore Volume One: Remixes, and a limited run cassette, Edward Kelley's Blues.
