Xiumin was born Kim Min-seok in 1990 in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in Guri, Gyeonggi Province and studied music at Catholic Kwandong University. In 2008, he competed in and took second place in SM's Everysing Contest, after which he became a trainee. In 2012, he joined EXO as lead dancer, vocalist, and rapper. With them, he enjoyed great success, consistently hitting the top of both the Gaon and Billboard World charts with albums like 2013's XOXO, 2015's Exodus, 2018's Don't Mess Up My Tempo, and 2019's Obsession.
Along with his pop career, Xiumin moved into acting, appearing in the 2015 web drama Falling for Challenge, the 2016 film Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River, and regularly appeared on the MBC reality TV show It's Dangerous Beyond the Blankets. Also away from EXO, he collaborated with NCT member Mark on the 2017 single titled "Young & Free" before he enlisted for his mandatory military service in 2019. On the heels of his enlistment, he released his debut solo single "You." After completing his service, Xiumin returned with his debut solo EP, Brand New, which reached the Top Ten in both South Korea and Japan. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
