Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Micah Zachary Visser learned to play the violin, saxophone, guitar, and piano, and eventually began writing songs. Later working with collaborators, Visser starting using the Boniface moniker once their sound expanded beyond what felt like a solo project. The musician's home-recorded performances and lyrics -- which often read like diary entries or private letters -- remained distinctly personal. Named for the Winnipeg neighborhood where Visser and brother/bandmate Joey Visser grew up, Boniface made their recording debut with the single "I Will Not Return as a Tourist" in 2017. A promotional EP followed in 2018 with the lineup of Micah, Joseph (guitar, keys), Louis Lévesque-Côté (bass), and drummer Micheal Dunn (drums).
Cataloging experiences from the songwriter's teens and early twenties, Boniface's eponymous full-length debut was recorded mostly in Visser's bedroom and partly in a studio in London, Ontario with producer/engineer Neil Comber (Charli XCX, M.I.A.), who helped animate lush arrangements. Featuring the trio of the Visser siblings and Dunn, Boniface arrived on Transgressive in February 2020. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
