Biography
Japanese quartet One OK Rock is a power pop/alt-rock band that draws on the sounds of American bands like blink-182, Foo Fighters, and Linkin Park. Debuting in the 2000s, they spent years building a following in their homeland, issuing a string of platinum-certified sets in the early 2010s until topping the charts for the first time with their seventh album, 2015's 35xxxv. Primed for an international breakthrough, they issued Ambitions in 2017, crashing charts in Asia, Europe, and the U.S., and followed up on that success with the chart-topping Eye of the Storm (2019) and Luxury Disease (2022).

Named for the time of the band's scheduled practice time, the group was established in 2005 by high schooler Toru Yamashita (guitar), who teamed up with bassist Ryota Kohama, vocalist Takahiro Moriuchi (known simply as Taka, formerly of boy band NEWS), and another guitarist, the San Francisco-born Alex Onizawa, who was later replaced by Tomoya Kanki. After a string of successful shows around Tokyo, the band debuted with the EP One OK Rock in the middle of 2006, followed by another mini-album, Keep It Real, by the end of the same year. In 2006, One OK Rock finally found a permanent drummer in Tomoya, who played on their first single, "Naihi Shinsho," which made its way to national radio and secured the band a deal with major-label Amuse. A nationwide tour preceded the release of the band's debut studio album, Zeitakubyou, which was followed by two LPs, Beam of Light and Kanjou Effect, in 2008. The following year, Onizawa parted ways with the group, leaving Toru to handle all the guitar duties. One OK Rock released their fourth full-length album, Niche Syndrome, in 2010. They quickly returned with Zankyo Reference in 2011, and two years later delivered Jinsei × Boku on A-Sketch. One OK Rock then toured the U.S. as part of the Vans Warped Tour in 2014 before returning to play stadium shows in Japan and South America later in the year. The Japanese number one album 35xxxv arrived in early 2015 and became their third platinum-certified effort. Making their big crossover into the U.S. market -- thanks in part to Taka's English language abilities -- they signed with Warner Bros. in late 2015 and re-released 35xxxv as a deluxe English-language edition.

The following year, the band signed with Fueled by Ramen and set about recording their second international album. Titled Ambitions and released in January 2017, it was a slicker, even more commercial proposition that took on some of the label's trademark characteristics. Charting across the globe, the set debuted just outside the Top 100 on the Billboard album chart, rising to number two on the U.S. rock chart. They were even recruited as openers for Linkin Park's One More Light tour, which unfortunately ended after frontman Chester Bennington's suicide. Taka appeared at a charity benefit memorial months later, honoring one of his group's biggest inspirations with his take on "Somewhere I Belong."

In 2018, the band kept the momentum going with anthemic singles "Change" and "Stand Out Fit In," which were included on their ninth album, Eye of the Storm. Released in early 2019, the inspirationally upbeat album also included a guest appearance from Kiiara on "In the Stars." The following year saw the band establish its own management agency and release the single "Renegades," which appeared on the soundtrack of the film Rurouni Kenshin Saishusho: The Final. In 2021, the group contributed "Broken Heart of Gold" to the film's sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, with the single "Wonder" appearing later that year. The band adopted a more rock-oriented sound on 2022's Luxury Disease, which was produced by Rob Cavallo. ~ Alexey Eremenko & Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi
