Legendary slide guitarist Peter Wells worked with such Australian rock outfits as Buffalo, Rose Tattoo, and Romeo Dog as well as releasing several solo blues/country albums in his own right. Wells started as a bass player with Brisbane band Head before becoming an integral part of Sydney band Buffalo, playing bass on the albums Dead Forever..., Volcanic Rock, Only Want You for Your Body, and Mother's Choice. Wells left the band in 1976 and, now playing slide guitar, helped form Aussie rock legends Rose Tattoo. During the next seven years, he toured internationally with the band and was featured on three albums: Rose Tattoo, Assault Battery, and Scarred for Life. In 1983, Wells formed the band Scattered Aces and they released Six Pack in April 1984. In November, Wells formed the band Illustrated Men with another ex-Rose Tattoo member, Ian Rilen, but by 1985, Wells had moved on to a blues outfit, the Lucy DeSoto Band. They released the albums Three Girls and a Sailor and Help Me Rhonda, My Boyfriend's Back. Wells and DeSoto only performed sporadically during the next three years before forming the band Heart Attack. Wells' debut album, Everything You Like Tries to Kill You, was released in late 1990 and he toured with the Peter Wells Band the following year, supporting such acts as Marianne Faithfull, Jeff Healey, the Stray Cats, and Bob Dylan. His second album, The Meaning of Life, was released in July 1992. Wells then joined the re-formed Rose Tattoo in early 1993 to support a Guns N' Roses tour. Wells third solo album, No Hard Feelings, was released in June 1993 and was followed by the Hard Done by You EP in August. In early 1994, Wells and DeSoto played the pub circuit again as Heart Attack until the release of Wells' fourth solo album, Orphans, in 1995. Wells then traveled to Germany, where he was featured on a hard rock/blues recording that evoked memories of Wells' Rose Tattoo days on the self-titled debut by Romeo Dog. Wells and DeSoto also formed part of Melbourne RB outfit Blues Hangover, who released their self-titled debut album in 1995 and Roadrunner in 1996. Wells released another solo album, Go Ahead, Call the Cops, in 1996 and also performed with Sydney RB band Black Smith Hopkins. In March 2006, Wells died of prostate cancer. ~ Brendan Swift, Rovi
