Formed around the talents of frontman David Gunn, guitarist Andrew Beal, bass player Eugene Gill, and drummer Andrew Workman, King 810 flexed their muscles regionally and issued a debut album, Midwest Monsters, independently in 2012 before inking a deal with Roadrunner Records. Their debut for the label, Memoirs of a Murderer, followed in 2014 and made a strong showing on the Billboard US Heatseekers and Hard Rock charts. Early 2016 saw the band issue a new single, "We Gotta Help Ourselves," in an effort to raise money for and awareness about the Flint water crisis. La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God, their sophomore studio album for Roadrunner, dropped in September of that year. Beal and Workman left the group in 2018, leaving Gunn and Gill to write all of the material for their next LP; 2018 also saw Gunn launch a solo rap project under the moniker Yavid and release Black Teeth Devil, Vol. 1. The following year heralded the arrival of the diverse Suicide King, which the band released independently, having amicably parted ways with Roadrunner the year prior.
