Clouds
from Perth, Scotland
Biography
Hailing from the small Scottish city of Perth, the duo Clouds -- Calum MacLeod and Liam Robertson -- slowly built a following through their somewhat ramshackle approach to producing electronic music. Finding influences originally in electro house and big room techno, mainly after stumbling across the Slam Tent, hosted by the influential Scottish label, at the T in the Park Festival, they set about producing with a minimal amount of musical equipment. The duo's first efforts found a home on British label Blood Music in 2010 with Liquid's mix of electro house and crunchy techno finding its way to the ears of Canadian DJ and producer Tiga, who signed the duo to his Turbo Recordings label. Releasing Matter in 2011 through the digital-only arm of Turbo, Clouds' first proper release for the label came in 2012 with the 12" Optic. With their sound slowly moving away from electro and incorporating more of an industrial edge, their next release, the Consciousness EP, pushed them closer to the clanking techno sound being explored by British producers, in particular Blawan. Tannhauser Acid Works I followed at the end of the 2012, with the duo cementing their place in the ever-growing British techno scene. At the beginning of 2013, Turbo hired a remote Scottish farmhouse for the duo -- due to the fact that they didn't have their own studio space -- so they could write their debut album, Ghost Systems Rave. Preceded by two singles, Radical Cutting Methods on Overlee Assembly and the Man Out of Dubs EP for Fifth Wall Records, the album, released in mid-2013, brought together all of the duo's influences, from IDM and rave to techno and their electro roots. Following the album, Clouds continued releasing singles and EPs on Turbo as well as other labels such as Soma (including a split remix 12" with Slam), Opal Tapes, and Speedy J's Electric Deluxe. ~ Rich Wilson, Rovi
