José Soto
Biography
José Sorderita Soto is a flamenco guitarist and singer. Born in 1961 in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, to a prestigious flamenco artist family, Soto came into his own as a founding member of Ketama, one of the main exponents of the New Flamenco movement in the early '80s. Soto made four albums with Ketama that were instrumental in pioneering the fusion of flamenco and world music, but he eventually grew disenchanted with the direction in which the Carmona brothers wanted to take the band, and he left Ketama in 1992. The same year he launched his solo career with the release of Motivos. In 1994 he would work again with Ketama for Songhai 2, a follow-up to their landmark 1988 album that first brought together Malian music and flamenco. Over the years Soto has continued releasing solo albums while embarking on a variety of projects, including a brief duo with Raimundo Amador, but he has proven most successful as a composer and producer for the likes of Vicente Soto, José Mercé, and Miguel Poveda. ~ Mariano Prunes, Rovi
