Victoria is one of the greatest Spanish composers of sacred vocal music. After studying in Spain, he went to Rome in 1565, where he may have studied with Palestrina. In any case, he spent most of his life at the Papal chapel in Rome, and eventually became the successor to Palestrina. He subsequently published several sets of masses and motets.
