Biography
Trevor Watts has led several groups under the name Moiré Music, with all sharing a focus on composition and world rhythms in sharp contrast to his earlier involvement in British improvisation. These groups have ranged in size from a trio to 14-piece group, beginning as a ten-piece group in 1982. It had a rotating cast over the years that included many top British musicians such as soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill and violinist Peter Knight (of Steeleye Span). Watts merged his Drum Orchestra with his Moiré Music project in 1990. The Trevor Watts Moire Music Drum Orchestra recorded for the ECM label in 1993, and the following year brought a trio formation. By the time of its two-year anniversary, the Moiré Music Trio consisted of Watts, bassist Colin McKenzie, and drummer Marc Parnell. Shifting lineups in Moiré Music continued over the years, but the late '90s found the trio joined still by many international percussionists. The Moiré Music Group lineups toured all over the world, from New Zealand, to the Caribbean, to Europe, to the Americas, to Africa. In 2000, the album Live at the Athens Concert Hall was released on Watts' Arc label. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi
