Biography
Bike for Three! is a long distance collaboration between Canadian rapper Buck 65 and Belgian electronica producer Joëlle Phuong Minh Lê. Born Richard Terfry in Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia, Buck 65 is an underground alternative rap veteran who made his full-length debut in 1995 with the album Game Tight on the Halifax-based label Murderecords. He first made waves across the international underground rap scene with Vertex (1997), a critically acclaimed album that was followed by a full-length effort on the well-regarded experimental rap label Anticon, Man Overboard (1999), which was also lauded. Buck 65 subsequently signed a major-label deal with Warner Music and began experimenting with a bold range of styles other than hip-hop on successive albums. Raised in Brussels, Belgium, of Vietnamese heritage, Minh Lê established herself in 2006 with the release of the debut Greetings from Tuskan album Lullabies for the Warriors, which she produced. Terfry and Minh Lê originally began working together in 2007, when they collaborated on a track for a Buck 65 tour mixtape hosted by Skratch Bastid, a DJ from Halifax. The one-track collaboration grew into a full-length album effort, More Heart Than Brains (2009). Released on Anticon, the album was a long distance collaboration between Minh Lê, who did her production work in Belgium, and Terfry, who recorded his vocal tracks in Canada. The release of More Heart Than Brains somewhat triumphantly marked the return of Buck 65 to Anticon ten years after the release of his first release on the label, Man Overboard. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
