Giovanni Andrea Fioroni
January 1, 1704 - December 14, 1778 (age 74)
Biography
Leo was his teacher in Naples for 15 years and in 1747 Fioroni became the master of the chapel in Milan. Judges for the competition included Martini and Perti. While in Milan, where he spent the rest of his life, Fioroni served for a number of different Cathedrals. The worthiness of his compositions can be appreciated by the fact that they were still being sung in two of the Cathedrals a century later (Ss Maria and Celso). Manuscripts for his sacred works indicate grandiose settings including eight part choruses and two organs. Admiration for his works was known far and wide primarily because of the ease and engaging quality of his melodic lines unusually facilited by complex ornamentation. His students included Gasparini, Quaglia and Marchesi. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
