Not to be confused in any way whatsoever with the famous AOR band Styx, the Styx put out one single in 1967. They were actually synonymous with Butch Engle the Styx, a minor San Francisco Bay Area folk-rock/garage band that put out a previous single (in 1966) on Loma and had been around since 1965. For their second and final single, on the Onyx label, the group billed themselves as merely "the Styx." Both sides of the single, Hey, I'm Lost/Puppetmaster, have been reissued on the BeatRocket collection The Best of Butch Engle the Styx, which also has both sides of the Loma single credited to Butch Engle the Styx; both sides of a 1964 single by the Showmen, which changed their name to Butch Engle the Styx; and nearly a dozen previously unreleased tracks. It's all a rather involved tale for a pretty insignificant band, whose recorded repertoire consisted entirely of songs written or co-written by Ron Elliott of the Beau Brummels, but not recorded by the Beau Brummels. Still, Hey, I'm Lost, the A-side of the Styx's lone single, is a fairly good folk-rock/garage hybrid, co-written by Elliott and Bob Durand, and unsurprisingly reminiscent of the Beau Brummels circa early 1966. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
