Biography
One of the lesser-known guitar pop bands to emerge from the fertile Athens, Georgia music scene of the 1980s, Time Toy was formed in 1984 by singer/guitarist Bryan Cook (formerly of Is Ought Gap), ex-Little Tigers guitarist Paul Hammond, bassist Danny Cottar and drummer Rob McMahon. The group favored a more rhythmically complex and danceable sound than most of its Athens brethren, with Cook's odd, rambling vocals owing more to spoken word performance than conventional singing -- as a result, Time Toy never enjoyed more than a small but devout cult following, although that fan base grew exponentially in 1986 when the band made a featured appearance in the documentary #Athens, Ga. inside/out, also contributing a pair of tracks (Window Sill and Hi) to its acclaimed soundtrack LP. While the film helped propel several other local acts to major-label deals, Time Toy was not as lucky, although they did tour the East Coast in tandem with fellow Athens artists like Love Tractor and the Squalls; they also appeared on a "quadruple single" alongside Mercyland, Eat America and the Bar-B-Q Killers. A full-length LP recorded with producer John Keane was completed but never released, and in 1987,McMahon resigned from active duty; Juan Molina replaced him on drums until Time Toy split in 1989. In 1998, Cook, Hammond, McMahon and Molina played a reunion gig in front of the Athens faithful before returning Time Toy to mothballs. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
