Ralph Horton managed David Bowie for a year or so in the mid-1960s, not doing a great deal to either hinder or advance Bowie's career. Horton, a former road manager for the Moody Blues, became Bowie's manager in the mid-1960s, when Bowie, still known as David Jones, was fronting the Lower Third. Horton influenced Bowie to adopt a more pronounced mod image, and helped Bowie's fourth single, Can't Help Thinking About Me, get to #34 in the Melody Maker chart with 250 pounds of payola. Horton stayed with Bowie as the singer left the Lower Third and hired the Buzz. In fact, the Lower Third had left Bowie because of their dissatisfaction with Horton, who had to immediately place an ad in Melody Maker for musicians to form a new backup band. In need of more money to finance the group, Horton approached the more established pop manager Ken Pitt, who agreed to take over the business side while Horton retained the artistic one.
