Biography
The first country act to ever reach the finals of the famed Eurovision Song Contest, Germany's tongue-in-cheek Texas Lightning reclaimed the sound and style of classic honky tonk for the postmodern era, resurrecting classics by Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline as well as more unconventional choices including Highway to Hell and Like a Virgin. Australian-born frontwoman Miss Jane Comerford formed Texas Lightning with German music veterans Jonny The Flame Olsen (vocals/guitar), Markus Fastfinger Schmidt (guitar/banjo), Uwe Friendly Frenzel (double bass), and Olli Ringofire Dittrich (drums). After making its debut performance at the Hamburg club Knust on December 23, 2000, the group remained largely a cult phenomenon until 2006, winning the German heat of the Eurovision Song Contest with the Comerford original No No Never and ultimately finishing the event in 15th place. No No Never later topped the German charts upon its official release, selling in excess of 300,000 copies. Its success also buoyed Texas Lightning's 2006 debut LP, Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch... Three years later the band released their sophomore album, 2009's Western Bound. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
