Biography
The gypsy tradition infused the compositions of Hungary-born violinist/composer Emery Deutsch. A native of Budapest, Deutsch grew up in Cleveland, OH. A resident of the United States from the age of eight, Deutsch went on to write such classic tunes as When a Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry and Play, Fiddle, Play. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, he spent much of his professional career in radio. The music director of a small station in Queens, NY, in the late '20s, he continued to serve in that position for the Columbia Broadcasting System after the station became the nucleus of the then new CBS radio network, a job he held for 11 years. Balancing his radio work with performances in hotels and clubs around the United States, Deutsch is remembered for his ultra-sweet sound. Settling in Miami, FL, in 1971, he continued to perform in hotels and clubs until 1995. He died two years later at the Villa Maria Rehabilitation Center in Miami. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
