Drokk
Biography
Drokk is the project of Portishead's Geoff Barrow and composer Ben Salisbury, who has written music for BBC productions including David Attenborough's Life of Mammals, Life in the Undergrowth, and Life in Cold Blood. The pair met in the early 2000s while playing for a Bristol, England soccer team, but didn't collaborate musically until 2010, when the idea of creating music inspired by the long-running comic Mega-City One sparked the interest of Barrow and album designer Marc Bessant. The duo wrote and recorded the music in a six-month span when Barrow was on break from touring with Portishead and Salisbury was free of other composing commitments. Focusing on a vintage 1975 Oberheim 2 Voice synthesizer along with a few treated and effect-laden acoustic instruments such as violin, piano, mandolin, and hammered dulcimer, Drokk: Music Inspired by Mega-City One harked back to John Carpenter's spare, eerie film scores and was released in April 2012 on Barrow's Invada label. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
