Lord of Putrefaction
Biography
By most any accepted measure of success, Dorset, England's Lord of Putrefaction accomplished precious little during their brief existence; and yet their name lives on thanks to an ultimate transformation, a few years down the line, into leading U.K. doom outfit Electric Wizard. It sure as hell didn't start out that way for eventual Wizard main man, vocalist, and guitarist Jus Oborn, though. When he first founded Lord of Putrefaction in 1988 with bassist Harry Armstrong and drummer Gareth Brunsdon, their influences consisted mostly of crusty, contemporary death metal acts like Carcass, Bolt Thrower, and Celtic Frost. But over the course of two demos (including 1989 underground favorite Necromantic) their songwriting gradually shifted toward creeping, death/doom tempos. By the time a revamped lineup matching Oborn with second guitarist Adam Richardson, bassist Dave Gedge, and drummer James Evans recorded a 1991 split release with Mortal Remains, the band felt that their name no longer fit them, and so they soon started calling themselves Thy Grief Eternal instead. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
