DJ Harrison
Biography
Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Devonne Harris, a member of the band Butcher Brown, records lo-fi funk and jazz under the name DJ Harrison. Across piles of releases dating back to 2010, if not earlier, the Richmond, Virginia native has displayed an encyclopedic and evolving grasp of several decades' worth of Black music, often reflected in track titles such as "Blue Note Boogaloo," "Chic 1979," "Slyish (Running Away Cover)," "My Letter to Joe (Henderson)," and "Erykah's Gun." In 2017, after Harris had stockpiled dozens of digital downloads of varying shapes and sizes, and had branched out by working with Nicholas Payton and the duo of Phonte and Eric Roberson, he joined the roster of Stones Throw, which had just licensed his gnarled synth-funk track "D2" for Sofie's SOS Tape. HazyMoods, his first release for the label, arrived that June. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
