Born in Alabama, Powell moved to Atlanta as a sophomore in high school and co-founded Third Day alongside guitarist Mark Lee -- Powell and Lee would serve as the group's sole constant members over the years. The band's winning blend of Southern rock and contemporary worship music quickly found an audience. By the time of their breakup in 2018, they had sold millions of records, landed 28 number one Christian album chart radio hits, and earned four Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and 24 Dove Awards. During the latter part of the group's career, Powell began to explore a more secular-based style, releasing an eponymous solo debut in 2020, followed by two years later by the country-leaning Southpaw. In 2019 he issued Back Again under the banner Mac Powell and the Family Reunion, which featured members from his previous solo recordings and touring bands. In 2021 he released the single "River of Life," which appeared on his CCM solo debut later that year. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
