Biography
A prolific musician and producer, Jürgen Engler is best known as the co-founder and frontman for German industrial metal/EBM outfit Die Krupps. In 1976 the Düsseldorf-born artist founded the punk band Male, one of the leading lights in the Neue Deutsche Welle (the German iteration of the punk/new wave movement). In 1980 Engler and Bernward Malaka formed Die Krupps -- the name refers to a 400-year-old German dynasty famous for their production of armaments. The band has been hailed as a pioneer of the industrial movement, alongside other influential German groups like Kraftwerk and Einstürzende Neubauten. In 1997, after releasing seven studio albums, Die Krupps disbanded, and Engler founded the like-minded DKay.com, who would go on to release two full-length studio albums before going on indefinite hiatus in 2004. The following year saw Die Krupps celebrating their 25th anniversary with a series of festival appearances and the release of a pair of greatest-hits compilations. Engler eventually relocated to Austin, Texas, where he established himself as a producer of note at Cleopatra Records, working with a diverse roster of artists including Iggy Pop, Sly Stone, Stabbing Westward, and Ministry. In 2013, Die Krupps released their long-awaited eighth studio LP, The Machinists of Joy, with V: Metal Machine Music dropping two years later. In 2017 Engler composed the soundtrack for the Faustian supernatural horror film Devil's Domain. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
