William Taylor
Biography
William Taylor was the first baritone singer in the Castelles, a doo wop combo from Philadelphia that recorded about a dozen songs during the first half of the '50s. Despite his involvement with the formation of the group, Taylor being among the original clique of 12- and 13-year-olds who began harmonizing at their gym, the sound of the Castelles seems even more associated with the baritone who replaced Taylor circa 1954, Walt Miller.
The Castelles, a serious passion of RB collectors from Philly, had a style that progressed well beyond teenage influences of the day, in no small part due to the brilliance of George Grant's high-tenor lead. Songwriting was also among the membership talents, second tenor and guitarist Frank Vance's My Girl Awaits Me predicting patience in a demo version. It was good enough to get the group signed in 1953 to Slotkin's Grand Records, the imprint of a local record store owner. Taylor sang on the official release of this song as well as the follow-up, a precious side entitled The Silver Ring. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
