Biography
A Welsh jazz pianist and composer whose work crosses and fuses many musical genre lines, Huw Warren was born May 18, 1962 in Swansea, Wales. His early exposure to music came as a cellist in a youth orchestra, and he moved on to organ, and then began to concentrate on piano, studying with experimental pianist John Tilbury at the University of London at Goldsmiths in 1980, involving himself in the local jazz and avant-garde scenes before moving his studies to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1983 and 1984. He co-founded the jazz quartet Perfect Houseplants with Mark Lockheart, Dudley Phillips, and Martin France, and the group released five albums with various labels. He also began a long collaboration with the English singer June Tabor as an arranger and musical director, which led to some ten albums over the years, and also has worked with Maria Lamburn, with whom he co-produced three albums. Warren has played and collaborated with an astounding number of musicians during his career, including Lleuwen Steffan, Mark Feldman, Maria Pia de Vito, Peter Herbert, Joanna MacGregor, Theo Bleckmann, Pamela Thorby, Erik Truffaz, Gabriele Mirabassi, Ralph Towner, R.A. Ramamani, Kenny Wheeler, Loose Tubes, Steve Arguelles, Julian Arguelles, Billy Jenkins, John Parricelli, John Etheridge, Christine Tobin, Tim Garland, Scott Stroman, Antonio Forcione, Brian Abrahams, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Eddi Reader, Echobelly, Christine Collister, and the Audio Bullys to name but a few, and his work is consistently far-ranging and varied. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
