Biography
A dark electronic side project formed in 2011 by Deftones singer Chino Moreno, Far guitarist Shaun Lopez, and bassist Chuck Doom, Crosses focused on the more soothing side of alternative, blending dream pop, synth pop, trip-hop, and ambient influences while emphasizing mood and melody over raw aggression. The original trio tested the waters with a pair of EPs, which eventually joined a batch of previously unreleased tracks to form their self-titled debut full-length in 2014. Quiet for the remainder of the decade, they returned in 2022 with a new label and EP, Permanent.Radiant.

The project was started by Lopez and Doom, who had been collaborating before Moreno completed the trio. Influenced by new wave, Crosses were a stark contrast to Moreno's alternative metal band Deftones, but tapped into the music he enjoyed when he was growing up. Their first material arrived in August 2011. EP1 featured Duff McKagan on "This Is a Trick" and Chris Robyn on drums. EP2 followed in January 2012, landing in the Top Ten on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. Rather than release a third EP, the group simply took the tracks from that planned released and combined them with the songs from EP1 and EP2 for their official full-length debut Crosses, which was released in 2014 on Sumerian Records. The LP shot to number 26 on the Billboard 200 and included the U.S. Top 40 single "The Epilogue."

Not much was heard from the act for the rest of the 2010s, during which time they went from a trio to a duo. On Christmas Eve, 2020, Moreno and Lopez surprised fans by releasing a cover of Cause Effect's early-'90s synth pop gem "The Beginning of the End." Exactly a year later, they issued another cover, this time of "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus. Now signed to Warner Records, the pair returned in 2022 with the EP Permanent.Radiant, which arrived that December. ~ Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi
