A Los Angeles native, Mayo grew up in a creative family with a singer mother and a saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist father. From an early age, he was exposed to music, listening to his parents perform with luminaries like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Luther Vandross. Mayo began singing at a young age and eventually became the third vocalist to be accepted into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance. There, he studied with performers like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Dianne Reeves. Along with earning his MFA degree, he has performed with a bevy of artists, including Kneebody, Christian Sands, Josh Groban, and Becca Stevens, among many others. As the leader of his own group, he has garnered critical acclaim for his appearances at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and the 2019 Playboy Jazz Festival. In 2020, Mayo released his debut album, the Eli Wolf-produced Bones, on Mack Avenue. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
