Biography
Multi-instrumentalist Martin Jenkins was part of the mid-'60s English folk revival, and made his official recording debut on Second Spring (1969) by Matthews' Southern Comfort. He was a member of the progressive pop band Dando Shaft from 1969 until 1972, and then joined Hedgehog Pie. He played with Bert Jansch's band for a time, and then rejoined his former Dando Shaft bandmate Kevin Dempsey in Whippersnapper, along with Dave Swarbrick and Chris Leslie. His proficiency on a multitude of instruments, including violin, cello, bass, and guitar, has placed him in high demand as a session musician. He moved in and out of various bands across the 1990s, pursuing his interest in traditional Balkan music, in addition to playing sessions for various artists, including Shirley Collins. Jenkins died of a heart attack on May 17, 2011 in Bulgaria; he was 65 years old. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
