Biography
Detroit teen rockers the Lourds earned their place in local music history as the band that launched the early career of the future Motor City Madman, Ted Nugent. The guitarist was just 14 years old when he joined the Lourds in 1962, with the remaining group members -- vocalist John Drake, rhythm guitarist John Finley, bassist Pete Primm, and drummer Tom Noel -- all averaging an age of 18. Soon after their formation, they won a local battle of the bands contest, beating out 60 other groups after Nugent performed his guitar solo while perched on the judges' table; their prize was the chance to open for the Supremes and the Beau Brummels at nearby Cobo Hall. The Lourds recorded a handful of tracks during their brief existence, with covers of Shake a Tail Feather, Out of Sight, and Good Lovin' later appearing on the Long Hot Summer compilation; the group disbanded in 1965 after Nugent's father was transferred to Chicago, in spite of the other members' best efforts to destroy every moving van in the Detroit area. Nugent and Drake later reunited in the Amboy Dukes. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
